There always seems to be something going on in the city. Head over to the waterfront to see the famous lion fountains and see what’s going on. There was a music festival on while I was there. There is a big mall next to the bridge to Sentosa, although the most scenic way to get to the island is by cable car which is pictured below. The island is basically an amusement park so you might want to opt for one of the outlying islands of Singapore which can easily be reached by ferry and would be a lot more scenic.
Singapore is a great destination that can easily be done on a budget. Backpacker type hostels and guesthouses are abound. I stayed at one that housed mainly international workers or students here for a few months. The metro system is a great way to get around and there seems to be plenty of buses going to every part of the city. I got the EZ-link pass (1-3 days) which can save you money if doing a lot of exploring with public transportation. If you have a long layover, the Singapore airport even offer free tours from the airport to the city. I think the minimum layover time is 4 hours to join on of these tours. There are two different terminals (a separate one for the budget airlines, which is mainly comprised of Tiger Airways. There is a free shuttle in-between the two terminals. The airport is right near downtown (Singapore really isn’t that big) so it’s easy to head into the city if even for look around. The first time I went to Singapore, I had an 8 hour layover and opted to take a bus into the city to explore. Since Tiger Airways is based here, you can often find cheap deals across Asia and even to Australia through them.
