We decided to drive out to the Palm Jumeirah and spend some time at the Atlantis shopping area called The Avenues. They do not have a large shopping center, but there are a few restaurants, coffee shops and an aquarium to visit (they have discounts if you live in the UAE). They even had a Gold vending machine (pictured below)!
There is a promotion going on to win a trip for 8 to the Atlantis including airfare, also pictured below. The Atlantis is now connected by monorail which should be connected to the nearby metro station of Dubai Internet City soon. The monorail station at Atlantis has the Avenues shopping and AquaAdventure waterpark is on either side of the station, so an easy walk from there.
There was also a lot of construction going on at the waterfont before getting to the Palm as they are building a rail line along the Jumeraih beach area. I thought the new line would be raised up like most of the metro lines, but it's not. It will be interesting to see how this affects traffic once finished. For now it's probably best to avoid driving in that area during peak times if possible.
We had great NY style pizza at a friend's place nearby. Flippin Pizza recently opened their first international outlet in Dubai... super yummy! We then did some shopping at the Geant's store at IBN Battuta mall since there is none close to where we live.
