Dargaville and it’s museum are along the western coast of the upper North Island, also known as the Kauri Coast. For those exploring the Far North or areas around the popular Bay of Islands, this can be an easy add-on. The museum is perched high above the town with views of the river and surrounding area. The beaches are a bit further drive out of town with the most popular being Baylys beach and the area around the amazing Kai Iwi Lakes. The museum also allows for overnight camping on their property for $20 (doesn’t matter how many people in the campervan), which is a nice change from the per person pricing at most NZ campgrounds. The nearby campground at Kai Iwi lakes is noticeably more expensive, especially if traveling with more than 2 people. There is a good loop up through Dargaville to the mouth of the Hokianga Harbour entrance, which goes past a large Kauri forest that has the oldest Kauri tree in New Zealand. This loop can be added onto a roadtrip either heading north or coming from the Far North of New Zealand.
