We went to Taupo Bay in the Far North of New Zealand for Christmas. This is one of the gems in the Far North that many locals know about, but not many international travellers go to. The bay is a great place to relax and catch some waves if there is a northerly swell. It was fairly mellow when we visited but that was good for the kids playing around.
The winding road is around 16km off the main motorway just before reaching the seaside town of Mangonui. The last part of the drive has amazing views of the bays and dozens of islands just offshore as you drop down the hill to access the bay by the only road. Some of the other great spots in the area are Matai Bay on the KariKari peninsula and the beach in Cable Bay. The sailing in Doubtless Bay is excellent. There are many more remote bays accessible only by boat or 4x4 with permission from property owners. The area is just a little farther from the Bay of Islands, which many people visit. My suggestion is to check out the northern beaches and islands if you get a chance. You will not be disappointed.
