After living in Wellington years ago, it was good to get back and reminisce. There were lots of new buildings and sights to see, with plenty of familiar places that hadn’t changed much at all. I was able to go for work, so most of my days were spent in meetings, but had the evenings to explore the city. Thankfully, I was able to add a few days to the trip for visiting places outside the CBD (central business district). Mount Victoria has a great overlook of the city and numerous hiking trails back to the city. This was my first time visiting here and it’s definitely recommended if you get a chance. Taking the Cable Car from Lampton Quay in downtown up to Kelburn is a must do activity. From the top, you can easily access the botanical gardens, Dominion Observatory or take a short stroll to Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), where I studied. I was fortunate enough to regularly take the cable car up to my classes, then hang out at the library which has a commanding view of the city. Te Papa (the national museum for New Zealand) is a must visit and is free of charge. It’s located on the waterfront with great views from the upper floors and rooftop terrace. Allow at least a few hours to take in all the displays and artwork. The Treaty of Waitangi is on display in the National Library if you want to see the original of the founding document of New Zealand, creating the country on February 6, 1841. There is an International Foodcourt on Willis street that has vendors selling ethnic food from around the world. This was a relatively new addition to the city and one that I frequented a few times while there. Lyall Bay is another of my favorite areas to visit. There is a long beach with alright surfing in the right conditions. Some takeaway shops are across from the beach so you can eat some fish and chips at the beach. Another great spot is cafe at the Lyall Bay surf club to get a coffee or reasonably priced food while taking in the great waterfront views! I would also recommend checking out some live music or a concert. As the ‘Cultural Capital’ of NZ, there is always lots going on. Do some research to find what concerts are going on during your visit and check the local event listing pages. Many coffee shops and pubs offer live music throughout the week and especially on the weekend. There are numerous events throughout the year such as Chinese New Year, Diwali, Jazz festival, Homegrown music festival and numerous international artists. Cuba street is lined with coffee shops, cafes and pubs that come alive in the evenings and weekends Even the airport is quite entertaining with many Lord of the Rings inspired displays and wall hangings
