There are many walks and sights to see near the main town center. From the castle at the top of the hill, numerous historical chuches and ruins scattered around the town, some dating to Roman times, to the boat tours around the lake. A poplular place to visit is the monastery near the border with Albania, where monks created the Cryllic alphabet. This is on the southside of the lake and is a great 50km roundtrip boat ride for 8 euro, with a few hours to enjoy the monastary and beaches there. There was also another boat directly to the Albanian side of the lake for 10 euro one way for those travelling that direction after Macedonia. Overall, the Lake Orhid area in Macedonia is a great budget friendly place to visit with lots of historical sites, beautiful vistas, lakeside walks and swimming areas to spend some time at. There are not many places like this left in Europe and I would definitely like to head back here in the future.
Lake Ohrid quickly became one of my favorite places in Europe. After flying into Sofia, I took a minibus to the Macedonian capital Skopje and then another down to Lake Orhid. The total time was around 5 hours and costed approximately 25 euros, with most of the expense getting to Skopje. Once there it is easy to find locals renting out rooms near the lake in for as low as 4 euros per person for a double room! I found an apartment with kitchenette with lakeview for not much more. The locals are friendly and helpful; people stopped to help translate things for me on more than one occasion. The lake is amazingly beautiful and reminded me of NZ.
