Whangarei has some great hikes on offer when exploring the Northland region. The trails are well marked and the local council puts a lot of effort into maintaining them. Wooden stairs and elevated walkways have been installed on many paths, making them more accessible. Here is a great website listing a number of hikes around the Whangarei Heads area. Another is the short walk over the hill to Smuggler's Cove. You can take the longer route close to the water to visit the World War II defense bunkers as a loop. There are lots of freedom camping spots in the area, so it's easy to spend a few days to enjoy the hikes and visit some great Northland beaches. Definitely worth a visit if planning a trip to the region or as an easy stopover on the way to the nearby Bay of Islands.
