There are some great views just off Signal Station Road near the town of Omapere in the Far North of New Zealand. There is a large parking area (no overnight camping allowed) with various trails to around the harbour entrance. Spectacular views of the sand dunes on the northern end of the harbour can be seen from here. The well maintained paths will take you to a great overlook at the top of the hill. Panoramic views of the Tasman Sea, Hokianga Harbour and area can be seen, usually with large waves rolling into the harbour. There is a path with steps down to the inner harbour, where there is a beach and rocks area popular with fishermen. Swimming is not recommended due to the intense currents. The rock area is only safe to fish towards low tide and only if there isn’t large waves. The rock ledge near the point drops to over 30m (100ft) deep of water almost immediately! The safest recommended time to fish is on an outgoing tide so you are not surprised by waves coming over the ledge. Many people come here for Kingfish and live bait is best according to locals. There are various walks in the area. the town of Opononi has a nice information centre with 4 Square Supermarket and Fish & Chip shop nextdoor. There is good parking, picnic tables and it is just across the street from the beach. Strong currents are present in this area, so best to enjoy the views instead of going for a swim. Overall, a very beautify area with mountains, waterfalls, sandunes and the harbour. Tip: if you make it out to this area, be sure to visit the Koutu Boulders and Waipoua Forest (with NZ's oldest Kauri tree)
